A labourer, charged with axing a man to death at Mibicuri South, Black Bush Polder (BBP) was remanded to prison when he appeared before Magistrate Tejnarine Ramroop at the Albion Court yesterday.
It is alleged that between Wednesday May 14 and Tuesday May 15 last at Mibicuri South, BBP, 51-year-old Cheddi Ramchandra Brijbilas murdered Amar Dhanraj, 29, who lived alone in the same area. A post-mortem examination conducted on Dhanraj showed that he died as a result of a fractured cervical spine.
According to reports an argument ensued between Dhanraj and Brijbilas over the amount of hassar that they had caught in the Savannah on Tuesday.
Sources said that the fish was supposed to be sold on Wednesday but a resident hired Dhanraj to go with him to collect wood and he reportedly asked Brijbilas to help him to sell his portion.
Reports are that the resident and Dhanraj were having a “drink” when the defendant joined them and related that only two buckets of fish were caught instead of four. This resulted in an argument between him and Dhanraj and he left to go home and continued drinking there.
Around 11:30 pm while Dhanraj was passing to go home, the defendant invited him for another drink. The argument over the “hassar” continued and the defendant reportedly picked up the axe and dealt him several blows behind his neck.
Although residents made a report to the Mibicuri Police Station, ranks refused to visit the scene, thinking that it was just a minor quarrel.
The residents stated that they attempted to rescue Dhanraj but Brijbilas locked his gate and gave him a sheet and pillow and put him to rest under his house. He was discovered dead at around 5:30 the following morning.
The matter which was prosecuted by police Corporal Rawle Ferreira has been transferred to the Mibicuri Magistrate’s Court [held at Whim Court building] on May 20.
