Maharaja charged in $1.9M jewels theft

Principal Magistrate Krishndat Persaud on Monday granted bail to a West Berbice man charged with stealing jewellery valued $1.9M.

Maharaja Evans, 20, was released on $75,000 bail when he appeared at the Blairmont Court to answer to charges of break and enter and larceny.

It is alleged that on May 27, Evans, of Bush Lot Village, broke into the dwelling of Vijay Ramjit, of the same village, and stole a quantity of gold jewellery. Evans was at first not required to plead when the indictable charge was read to him. But after an application was made for summary disposal he pleaded not guilty.

According to the facts of the case, after Ramjit secured his house and left for work Evans used a key to gain entry to the house and removed the jewellery which was in a purse in the bedroom. On his return home Ramjit discovered the items missing. Acting on information received, two police officers went to Evans’ home where they recovered the items.

Evans was initially placed on $100,000 bail but had the sum reduced after attorney-at-law, Joel Persid Edmond entered an appearance on his behalf “as a friend of the court.” He told the court that the family is not in a “stable financial position.”

Evans was ordered to appear in court on June 16 for report and fixture.
