Six ‘strangers’ charged with Kingston $5M robbery

Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton yesterday remanded six men, who allegedly robbed a businessman of over $4.8 million in cash and other items, when they appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

Randy Morris, Dennis Williams, Bryan Alli, Patrick De Souza, Bhojnarayan Gopaul and Parmeshwar Sukhdeo (no addresses given) were not required to plead to the charge of robbery under arms when it was read to them. It is alleged that on May 27 in Georgetown the men while being armed with a dangerous weapon, one hand gun, robbed businessman Satnarine Sahadeo of $4 million cash, cellular phone, a handgun and a quantity of jewellery together worth $4,878,400.

The various attorneys representing the men told the court that it is difficult to believe that six men using one hand gun would rob someone. Further, they all maintained that the six men were strangers and this was the first time they were seeing each other.

The prosecution objected to bail stating that Alli and De Souza were detained by the police after some difficulty. Williams, unrepresented, was remanded to prison while the other five defendants were refused bail. The matter will continue on August 5.

Satnarine Sahadeo, his wife and two employees were in their vehicle at Cowan and Water streets, Kingston around 3.05 pm after transacting business at a city bank, a May 27 police press release said, when a car drove up alongside them.

Two men were in the vehicle, one of whom pointed a gun at Sahadeo’s vehicle and ordered them to stop. The men carted off $4 million, a quantity of jewellery, a cellular phone, the businessman’s licensed firearm and ammunition before escaping.
