Street dwellers jailed for having ‘jukkers’

Two street dwellers who were found with improvised ice-picks, commonly known as ‘jukkers’,  in their possession were ordered to spend several months in prison when they appeared yesterday before Magistrate Ann McLennon at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

Forty-four-year-old Delon Wallis known as “Joel” and Paul Emanuel known as “Buck” both pleaded guilty to the charge of possession of a dangerous weapon without having satisfactory excuses when questioned by the police.

“I deh sleeping on de pave and somebody lash me in meh head with a wood and duh is how I left suh, de thing left me numb,” said Wallis who was trembling uncontrollably in the courtroom. He stated that since he had been on the receiving end of “dem boys” assaults he had kept the improvised ice-pick in his possession to defend himself.

The prosecution also stated that on November 4 on Robb Street, a policeman who was in the area observed Wallis lying in a suspicious position on the pavement and when he approached him, Wallis told the policeman “officer I gon tell yah de truth, I have a ice-pick on me because a man tek away me child mother and I gotta juk he up.”

Wallis was then searched and the improvised ice-pick was found on him and he was arrested.
On the same day, the same policeman observed Emanuel on North Road sitting between several vehicles and when he approached him he started to behave in a suspicious manner. A search was conducted on Emanuel and the policeman discovered an improvised ice-pick in his pants waist. He was then arrested.

“I got it, is because deh got people advantaging people out deh,” said Emanuel.
The prosecution exhibited two slender, pointed pieces of metal that were found on Wallis and Emanuel.

The magistrate subsequently sentenced Wallis to three months imprisonment while she sentenced Emanuel to twelve months.
