GPL employee cut off for small amount

Dear Editor,

I have been an employee with the power company for over twenty years. Last week Wednesday I was disconnected by GPL agents for an outstanding amount of less than $5,000.00 on my light bill. The following day I went to the Main Street Office and paid the outstanding amount plus the reconnection fee of $3,200.00. I was very upset at this situation.

Friday of the same week at about 19:30 hrs while I was at home I received a call from my employer GPL to report at my workplace as an emergency on the network had developed and as a result over 500 consumers were out of power. To be honest, all sorts of negative things ran through my mind, especially when I remembered the unacceptable manner in which I was treated by my employer just a few days before, but my childhood upbringing taught me not to fight fire with fire. My family who were also affected by the disconnect thought differently. However after giving it some serious thoughts and convincing my family that as Christians we should not allow ourselves to be engaged in revengeful acts, I reported to my base and within the space of one hour the fault was corrected and the affected consumers were repowered.

Owing to this development which would have caused GPL to lose much needed revenue had I not responded positively I urge management to rethink its strategy on how to deal with its employees who may have outstanding balances on their light bills.

Yours faithfully,
