How many more lives must be lost?

Dear Editor,

Our nation has witnessed one of the worst atrocities of its time. Crime has stuck its dirty, evil head into the sanctity of our children’s beds.

How many more lives have to be lost before the Government steps up to the task at hand? Are the security forces capable of getting a grip of this situation? And if they are, why has it been allowed to escalate the way it has? How can a gang of 20 overpower an army of thousands? Who is really calling the shots in the area of national security?

Why hasn’t the Govern-ment requested international assistance, especially in the form of intelligence gathering?

The President stood before a gathering of grieving, hurting people and spoke about some old guns that went missing when Noah was a scout. How could anyone be so insensitive? Does anyone care about the 1970s at a time like this. Why does this Government continue to live in the past?

Does this Government not realise how this type of approach can fuel racial division? Or was that the intention?

What does the Govern-ment hope to achieve by arming policing groups? Why must civilians do the job of the police force?

Clearly, the guns used in these crimes are not from the 70s. Where are these high powered automatic weapons coming from? With whose permission? Who signed off on its shipment? Was it shipped like the barrel of counterfeit money?

Clearly, this government has not been able to protect us. Do they at least have the decency to step down? When they secure their mansions at night, do they even think about those living in little shacks, milked by VAT and barely getting by? But please, these poor people have a right to be safe, don’t they? When will this Government stop allowing our children to be killed?

Lastly, I call on the administration to cancel Mash-ramani celebrations this year in solidarity of the families who lost their loved ones. Think about it. Out daily existence is threatened. Do we honestly have reasons to ‘celebrate’? I think not.

Yours faithfully,
