Every so often I rescue an animal that has been so cruelly abused I cannot sleep at night. I wonder: Was the dog so trustful it let its owner beat it so, or was it tied up and beaten by a crazy person? On April 23, 2008, a cartman came to my gate and described to me what he had just seen in a yard on D’Urban Street.
I went to the location (D’Urban Street in a back house), and saw what turned my stomach; I became confused and emotional. A female dog was lying on a piece of wood, in the midst of sewage water, defecating, gasping for air, with blood flowing from stab wounds in the neck; her body had several chops and one of her eyes was missing.
I called the clinic but the driver was ill so I cleared the trunk of my car and with the help of a kind young man (using a pair of disposable gloves) we lifted the suffering animal into my car. The poor dog was so out of it she could not resist. We laid her on a plastic sheet and newspapers; she looked so helpless, we were both in tears. I told her to hang on and she would soon be free of pain and would never be abused again. I took her to the GSPCA where everyone who saw her was shocked at her condition. She was euthanized immediately.
We must speak out against such cruelty. It should never be allowed to happen. When you see cruelty to animals, pick up the phone and call the GSPCA at 226-4237. They have a vehicle and 3 inspectors.
From my records and for unknown reasons, female dogs seem to get abused more frequently than males. This is all the more reason for thinking people to spay their female cats and dogs.
