Ramkarran’s reduced votes at PPP Congress should be no surprise

Dear Editor,
It is no surprise that Mr Ralph Ramkarran would attract the attention of heavy guns at the PPP Congress to reduce his votes so substantially. He is the front runner who needed to be brought down to make way for the others who included Messrs Donald Ramotar, Robert Persaud, Moses Nagamootoo and a new addition, Dr Frank Anthony. While this ought to have been anticipated by Mr Ramkarran, it hardly matters in the long run. Mr Ramkarran’s superior qualities and qualifications, obvious to everyone, will eventually win out.

Neither high nor low votes have of recent times had any bearing on the outcome of the selection for President. Mr Nagamootoo’s much vaunted top votes at a recent congress resulted in loggerheads with the PPP. Mr Bharrat Jagdeo’s votes before he was named heir apparent have not been paraded in public. They would have been had they been high. That means that they must have been low. Dr Frank Anthony’s high showing is not expected to catapult him into front-runner status.

So the congress settled nothing. Mr Nagamootoo retains the same confrontational stance that he always had which got him into trouble before and will be used against him again, even though he and Mr Ramkarran are the only two persons who are qualified to seek the PPP’s nomination. Mr Robert Persaud is fading and Dr Frank Anthony is a non-starter. Between Mr Ramkarran and Mr Ramotar, I don’t believe that any serious person will have difficulty in making a choice.
Yours faithfully,
Derrick Misir
