A life well spent

Dear Editor,
I’ve been deeply saddened at the passing of David de Caires and my prayers and thoughts are with Doreen, Brendan, Isabelle and their families.
I’m comforted by the knowledge that his was a life well spent. He didn’t hide his talents but invested them, wisely. Those of us who have had the privilege to work with him were imbued with the belief that our only limits were ourselves, and we knew that, should things go wrong, we had a very fine legal brain to support us. That was comforting.

He was considerate and caring, and I remember him even sharing his house with me and another reporter when we were in a pinch. From him I learnt to listen and to understand that everyone needed to be heard. He never let us believe he was infallible or superhuman. I remember after his first heart surgery we all got to examine his scars.

We were allowed to disagree with his opinion, laugh and cry and panic with him. Above all he was encouraging and fair.
He will be truly missed. He leaves a giant’s shoes to be filled.
Yours faithfully,
Desiree Wintz
