GABA launches Brydens 2nd Division B-ball league

President of the Georgetown Basketball Association (GABA), Chris Bowman yesterday launched the Brydens Second Division Basketball league which is set to begin on Wednesday.

The GABA yesterday reported that the tournament would feature 14 teams throughout Georgetown, including the Georgetown veterans unit and a combination of junior national players.

According to the GABA, the presence of the junior national team which should be a reflection of the country’s top young players, a more experienced veteran team as well as 12 of Georgetown’s best clubs, should help the Bryden’s Second Division league provide a unique blend of basketball – the past, present and future of the sport in Guyana.

The tournament will be played at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall on Saturday and Wednesday evenings for the next twelve weeks.

Start time each night is 6pm and there will be three games every evening. The GABA said it was keen on a punctual start for all matches so as to remedy the problem of games finishing after midnight which is also inconvenient for many fans.

The association is currently in the process of releasing fixtures for the league as well as a list of players who will not be eligible to compete in the division.

The league may include some First Division players as well as most of the Third Division players, but it will not accommodate any senior national players.

Bowman kicked off this first activity of the year for GABA at yesterday’s presentation for the winners and runners-up in the Next Level Entertainment/Banks DIH LTD Super Eight Knockout competition which concluded in mid-December last year.

The Ravens Basketball club received the first place prize of $60,000 while Nets received $30,000 in second place and Bounty Colts $15,000 for the third spot.

Marketing Executive of Banks DIH Ltd, Carlton Joao, said that he was looking forward to another collaborative effort with the basketball fraternity since the Super Eight tournament was a success. He also took the opportunity to announce the offering of sports scholarships by Banks DIH for athletes to attend the University of Guyana. The scholarships will allow the awardees to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Communication.
