Sunburst Camptown, GDF book quarter-final places

Sunburst Camptown Football Club and the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) are the last two teams to book their places in the quarter-finals of the inaugural Banks Premium Beer Cup 16-team knockout tournament following the final two preliminary matches Saturday evening at Tucville Playfield in La Penitence.

Camptown downed newcomers Houston Stars 3-0 while the Soldiers humbled Georgetown Football Club (GFC) 5-0.

Camptown held a 2-0 lead at half time through goals by Lancelot Roylston and Telson McKinnon against the Houston Stars one of the teams recently promoted to first division in the Georgetown Football Association (GFA).

Three minutes into the second half, national player Troy Prescod netted the third goal of the match to send Houston Stars packing while Camptown now awaits a showdown with GDF the 2007 NAMILCO knockout champions, who dominated GFC in their fixture.

Sean Arthur opened the account for the Soldiers in the 14th minute of play and three minutes later Stellon David hit home goal number two as GDF held a 2-0 lead at the half.

GFC held off their opponents for a while before Kevin Lewis netted the third goal for GDF in the 71st minute and then Ryan Morrison scored in the 77th minute before Jerome Richardson converted goal number five.

The first of the quarterfinal matches were to be played last evening with Fruta Conquerors clashing with Santos while Western Tigers were to meet Pele.

The other two quarter-final matches will be played tomorrow evening with Alpha United colliding with Uprising, while Guyana Defence Force will tackle Camptown.

The semi-finals will be played off on Friday while the final and third place playoff will take place on Sunday at the Tucville Playfield.

The tournament is sponsored by local beverage giants Banks DIH Ltd. and organized by the GFA.

At stake in the competition is a first prize of $250,000with the runners-up team securing $125,000, the third place side will take home $75,000 while fourth place will receive $50,000.
