Nicholas Narain completed his third straight victory in three nights when he defeated Kayla Jeffrey on Thursday evening in one of the round robin matches of the Guyana Squash Association’s Toucan Industries Mash tournament at the Georgetown Club.
So far, Narain has defeated Ashley Khalil, both of the Jeffrey sisters Kayla and Keisha, and will be playing his next match against Daina King.
Due to the nature of the tournament, players are grouped according to their skill level which resulted in Narain being placed in the ‘B’ category along with long-time rival Joshua Abdool who is the only other male in the category.
Although all of his victories were against the fairer sex, Narain said that each of the girls who he played was extremely talented and made him work hard for his victories.
“All the matches were very tough especially the one against Ashley and I am just glad that I got past them and I am looking forward to playing Joshua since we have had a rivalry going on between us for a while,” he said.
He also mentioned to Stabroek Sport that he felt that he should have been placed in Category ‘A’ and will be looking to put out his best performances to show his improved game to selectors and coaches.
Joshua Abdool was also victorious Thursday evening when he came back from trailing 0-1 games to capture the next three against Keisha Jeffrey.
In category ‘C’, Abhishek Singh gave Stefan Jeffrey a scare and pushed him to an intense five-game match but Jeffrey prevailed in the end.
Singh fought hard to stage the only upset of the night and had to first overcome a two-game deficit to be in contention. Singh rose to the occasion and won the third and fourth games 8/10 2/9, as he took advantage of an injured Stefan Jeffrey.
Jeffrey was determined not to lose three straight games and gave a final fight to win the last game 9/6.
