Gouveia wins Stabroek News-sponsored golf tourney

Ian Gouveia with a 15 handicap scored a net 39 to win last weekend’s Stabroek News’s Full Handicap Stableford Golf tournament played at the Lusignan Golf course.

Imran Khan with a handicap seven scored a net 38 to finish second while Colin Ming with 37 points playing with a handicap 11 was third.
Lester Alvis edged out Dr. Ramsingh on a countback for fourth position after both golfers ended on 36 points.

Khan also won a prize for being Closest to the Flag.

Stabroek News’s Sports Editor Donald Duff presented the prizes to the top performers while Doreen DeCaires, former General Manager and wife of the Publisher of the daily newspaper David DeCaires was also present.

In brief remarks Duff gave his company’s commitment to sponsoring the tournament annually.

Patrick Prashad, Club Captain of Lusignan Golf Club (LGC) thanked Stabroek News for sponsoring the tournament.

He noted that Stabroek News’s contribution was twice the value of the club’s regular weekly sponsorship.

President of the LGC Mel Sankies said there was a very good turnout for the tournament which he said was s sign of growth.

The golfers are now gearing themselves up for this Saturday’s tournament which will be sponsored by Vish Trading Company dealers in heavy duty equipment of Le Ressouvenir on the East Coast of Demerara starting at 12:30 hours. The Medal Play format will be used and prizes will be awarded to the top three finishers and Nearest to the Flag.

The Managing Director of Vish Trading is expected to be on hand to assist in the presentation of prizes.

Meanwhile, the Club is on a drive to attract new members and is offering a 50 percent discount on membership fees.

Club Secretary, Ronald Bulkhan disclosed that the club was also prepared to offer free classes to beginners and looked forward to seeing new members come on board.
