Wins for GDF and Pele as Premier League continues

There were wins for the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and Pele Football Club respectively when action in the Georgetown Football Association (GFA) 2008 Cellink Plus-sponsored Premier League competition continued at the Tucville ground on Sunday.

In the first game of the double header, GDF, led by a Stellon David hat-trick, gave Uprising a  7-1 whipping whilst Pele overcame a strong challenge from Santos Football Club to win by a 3-1 margin.
GDF indicated their intentions from the opening whistle when they launched a relentless assault on their opponents’ goal which resulted in Dwight Peters finding the back of the net in the11th minute.

It was 3-0 10 minutes later courtesy of a Kevin Lewis double in the 20th and 21st minutes of play  as GDF took a comfortable 4-0 lead at lemon time.

Upon resumption, Uprising took the fight to their opponents but poor finishing along with the inability to find their forwards proved a major hindrance.

It was no surprise when David scored the first of his three goals 13 minutes into the second half and another eight minutes later.

Former national forward Anthony ‘Lambada’ Stanton pulled one back for his team two minutes after David got his second, but it was all over bar the shouting when David completed his hat trick of goals in the 87th minute which  completely knocked the wind out of Uprising’s sails.  In the feature match of the double header, Pele had to pull out all stops to defeat Santos 3-1. Having had to come from one down as early as the 14th minute due to a Carlos Monkhouse goal for Santos, Pele regrouped and launched a relentless attack on their opponents goal which  left them bewildered even after the final whistle went.

Travis Grant, who had a wonderful game for his club,  scored the equalizer in the 25th minute which added an extra surge of energy to the blue and yellow clad Pele team.
Linden Simmons then flew an offside trap just on the stroke of the half time whistle to ensure his team went into the break ahead.

The second half was no different for the all-white Santos but even though they launched an all out attack on their opponents in search of the lead, they were unable to do so even squandering goal scoring opportunities.

Simmons let loose a ripper 18 minutes into the second half to send his team further into the lead.

It was evident soon after that Santos were playing for time and had it not been for excessive dribbling by the Pele forwards, the score line could have had a different reading at the final whistle.

The competition will continue on Friday with another double header where fans will have the opportunity of seeing Sunburst Camptown take on Georgetown Football Club from 1800hrs whilst defending champions Alpha United  will take on the GDF in the feature clash from 8pm.
