– Heyliger misses out on ton

Keon Greavsande (66) Stephen Latcha (5-53) and Sahadeo Somai (4-66) were the outstanding performers on the second day of the first three-day Under-19 trial match at the Malteenoes Sports Club ground organized by the Guyana Cricket Board.
Replying to La Fleur’s XI first innings total of 275 all out of which Dellon Heyliger made an unbeaten 94 Alkins’s XI were bowled out 226 with Greavsande’s half century leading the way.
Calvin Sookraj (43) and Seon Hetymyer (31) offered support.
Batting a second time, La Fleur’s XI were 22 without loss at stumps.
Heyliger has only himself to blame for missing out on the ton even though he played a team game and fell into the trap set by Alkins’s XI.
They offered him a single off the first ball and he duly obliged only to see his partners lose their wickets at the other end.
After dismissing their opponents, who resumed on their overnight 268-8 inside the first hour of play, Alkins’s XI found itself in early trouble when Trevon Griffith was caught by wicket-keeper Dexter Solomon off the bowling of left arm fast bowler Andre Stoll.
However Sookraj and Rajendra Nikbarran posted 56 runs for the second wicket.
Sookraj was adjudged lbw to Somai on the stroke of lunch for a run-a-ball 43 decorated with eight well timed fours and one six after batting for 56 minutes.
Nikbarran and Hetymyer soldiered on, posting a further 56 runs for the third wicket with some positive batting before the former, who looked well set for a big total, was lbw to Latcha for 32.
He faced 86 balls and struck five fours.
Shortly after, Hetymyer was caught at the wicket by Solomon off Heyliger who then trapped Alkins on the crease as Alkins’s XI slipped to 113-5.
Greavsande found a useful partner in Imtiaz Ishmael and they added 36 runs for the sixth wicket before Somai bowled Ishmael for nine and then had Demerara under-19 captain and wicket keeper/ batsman Denver Greaves smartly taken by Heyliger at extra cover as he went for a drive.
Dennis Legay took 26 balls to open his account and when he came off the mark, it was in spectacular fashion, courtesy of a straight drive for four off Latcha but he succumbed to the same bowler in his next over.
Latcha took over the captaincy following the injury sustained by La Fleur and lead from the front with the ball taking 5-53. Somai (4-66), Heyliger 2-27 and Stoll 1-36 were the other wicket takers in an innings that saw 13 batsmen take to the crease.
In the 36 minutes available for batting, openers Eon Hooper (12) and Michael Felix (8) ensured there were no casualties as they posted 22 to add to the first innings lead of 49.
