King, Rahaman steal show at South Dakota

Superior throttling gave Andrew King and Ryan Rahaman the edge over their opponents at the South Dakota Circuit yesterday as the Guyana Motor Racing and Sports Club (GMR&SC) held the second round of its National Race of Champions meet at the South Dakota Circuit.

KING ANDREW! Andrew King and some of his loyal subjects after he took top honours in the prestigious Group Four category at the Guyana Motor Racing and Sports Club National Race of Champions meet at the South Dakota Circuit yesterday. (Lawrence Fanfair photo)The 23-race programme, which was sponsored mainly by the Guyana Telephone & Telegraph Company (GT&T), Sunburst Orange Juice and Carib Beer, saw King winning two races in Group Four and Rahaman sweeping the Group Three category.

Top driver Mark Vieira had a horrible day at the office with mechanical problems forcing him out of two of the three Group Four events.
In the first Group Four race, King blew away Kevin Jeffrey in what was virtually a two-person race as they were the only two competitors left in the race after one competitor withdrew after the first lap and the other (Mark Vieira) in the fourth.

The tables were turned in the second Group Four, 10-lap event as King was forced to play second fiddle to Jeffrey while Andrew Morgan finished third.

In the final Group Four race, King sped to victory ahead of Vieira who was forced out of the second race as well due to car problems.

Ryan Rahaman put on a terrific display of driving to become undisputed Group Three champion as he stormed to victory in all Group Three races while Gregory Lopes was in a class of his own as he swept the Superbike category riding off into the sunset with all three six-lap races.

Charles Henry was fantastic in the 125cc Motor Cycle category winning the first two events and finishing second to Christopher Mc Lean in the final 125cc event while stiff competition in the Group 2A category saw Saheed Hassan stepping up to the plate and delivering two wins out of three after Ernesto Choo had won the first race in that category.

In the Go-Kart competition the competition was stiff between cousins Steffon and Kristian Jeffrey.

Steffon pressured his cousin Kristian in all three Go Karts races but Kristian prevailed and managed to hold his nerve and sweep all three contests.
