GASA Independence swim meet

Linden Wickham and Noelle Smith outclassed their opponents in the 13-14 age category during yesterday’s final day of competition of the Guyana Amateur Swimming Association’s (GASA) Independence swim meet at Colgrain Pool.

Wickham, who is a member of the Silver Shark Aquatic Swim Club, picked up where he left-off the previous day, continuing to gap his opponents in every event. He gained a total of seven victories during the meet.
Wickham’s wins were made more impressive by his timing, clocking a speedy 1:07.39s in the 100-yard backstroke race and 29.95s in the 50-yard backstroke event which ranked amongst his most impressive times of the day.

After a quiet but successful start the first day, Smith got into full gear on the day two and made light work of her competitors in her favoured events.

Smith enjoyed victories in the 50 and 100 yards freestyle events as well as 100-metre butterfly and the 50-metre backstroke events.

She could not be caught in the 50-yard backstroke event where she clocked 36.92s, while Ariel Davis – who came second to Smith every time they met – trailed in second place.

Serrano Gonsalves and Sorroya Simmons took charge of the very competitive 11-12 category.

Simmons got the better of some close finishes in most of the races in that category but Aureyah Payne managed to sneak away with a tight victory in the 50-metre backstroke event.

Roberts continued to flourish on day two and was pushed to the limit by the lone competitor in the 18-years-and-over category, Jamal Sobers, who had to be squeezed into most of the 15-17 races to avoid swimming alone.

Accalia Khan also prevailed in the majority of the races in the girls’ 11-12 category while six-year-old Sarah King gave courageous performances which resulted in many podium finishes throughout the day in that age group.
