Pepsi Hornets sting opponents

Seven players, seven-and-a-half minutes per half, seven games, two winners, was how the tournament format ran as the Pepsi Hornets dominated the male and female categories of the Banks DIH Rugby Sevens championships yesterday at the National Park, Rugby Playfield.
In the women’s division the Yamaha Caribs defeated Pepsi Hornets in game one but the two teams played to a stalemate in the second game.

Andrea Lashley of Yamaha Caribs scored the only try of the first game (which she also converted) which ended 7-0 in favour of the Caribs whilst the two sides played to a goalless draw in the second encounter.

In the decider, Pepsi Hornets, on the back of a Thrisha Munroe try, ran out 5-0 winners to claim the women’s title.

The three teams that contested the round-robin men’s final were the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), Yamaha Caribs and Pepsi Hornets. The GDF bowed out to Pepsi Hornets 7-12 in game one with Avery Corbin scoring a try for the GDF which was converted by Cloyd Prowell.

For Hornets Albert La Rose and Delroy Gordon scored tries with Ryan George converting the first.

In the second game Yamaha Caribs and Pepsi Hornets played to a 14-14 draw.
La Rose and Jason Tyrell scored tries which were both converted by George while Alan Crawford and Walter George scored tries for the Caribs both of which were converted by national player Theodore Henry.

In the third match Yamaha Caribs edged the GDF 15-12.
National player Claudius Butts, Henry and Gordon Andrews each scored tries none of which were converted.

For the GDF, Prowell and Avery Corbin scored tries none of which were converted.
In the final Pepsi Hornets pulled out a close win 24-19 against the Caribs.
For Pepsi Hornets captain Elwin Chase, scored two tries one in each half while Dane Parks and Gordon each scored tries two of which were converted by Satesh Samaroo.

For the Caribs, Butts and Henry scored tries which were converted by Henry while Walter George scored the final try which Henry failed to convert.
