Jacobs drops 33 to help Linden shutout NA

By Kiev Chesney

Linden’s Nicola Jacobs’ performance helped her team blowout the New Amsterdam ladies 75-39 when the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation Inter Sub-Association Championships continued on Saturday evening at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.

Jacobs dumped 33 points which was just six points shy of equalling the opposing team’s total.

She could not be contained, hitting shots from all over the floor to sink the Berbice ladies to a whopping 36 points defeat.
Linden’s other offensive weapon, Maurice Skeete, contributed 16 of her team’s final total.

Although Shemery Benn had a great night on the offensive end with a 22-point performance for NA, it was hardly enough to stop the ladies from the mining town.

In final game of the evening, Georgetown U-23s brushed aside New Amsterdam U-23s 76-54.

Georgetown’s roster received some criticism from basketball fans since it did not include any of the U-20 players who had already clinched their championship victory the week before.

Some of the players told Stabroek Sport that they were informed that would be left out of the U-23 championship for other player to gain exposure.

The GT squad included the experienced senior-national point guard Ryan Stephney, along with senior forwards Ryan Gullen and Jermaine Hamilton and guard Randy Burgess.

Coach Mark Agard and his assistant Vijai Panday made sure every player on the GT bench got a chance on the floor, but more often than not, their playing time was short as NA took those opportunities to cut back on the GT lead.

However GT’s top players would always return to the floor and put things back in perspective.

Hamilton top scored with 16 points, while Randy Burgess provided much support with a 14-point performance.

Burgess’s diehard hustle propelled his team away from their opponents and may have erased all memories of the ankle-breaking crossover from Theopilous Bess which left him flat on the hardwood, sliding off the sidelines in the second quarter.

Stephney also managed to chip in with 10 points before he fouled out late in the fourth quarter, while Bess and Brandy Caesar with 12 points and Hugh Arthur with 10, led the way for NA.
