Training programme should have involved more young footballers from the hinterland

Dear Editor,
I have noted that the recent Digicel Football competition which was held in Guyana included a training programme for over 100 young footballers from around Guyana.

While this idea of the training programme was an excellent one and it undoubtedly benefited the youngsters, I was most disappointed that there were not more young footballers from the hinterland locations involved in the exercise. True, there was a press release about a young female footballer from the North West area being part of the programme (about which the sponsors tried to maximise publicity), but what about the male footballers? Couldn’t Digicel or GFF identify male footballers from the North West area such as Moruca or Mabaruma? What about places like Lethem in the Rupununi?

Once more, an event has occurred where our hinterland footballers could have had meaningful participation, but once again the authorities did not deem it important enough to have a few players selected. This is now the summer holidays and it would have been the highlight of a young hinterland footballer’s holidays if he was selected to go on a national training activity.

Digicel is arguably the largest cellular provider in the hinterland areas, especially the Rupununi region. One would hope that its Public Relations personnel do some more research in the future so that when they are providing the next event, such as the training camp, more young footballers from the hinterland are involved. After all, Digicel’s corporate responsibility does not only cover the coastland but also those far-flung hinterland locations where their service is also utilised.
Yours faithfully,
M. Abraham
