Chattergoon and De Jonge slam more half centuries Port Mourant win by 10 wickets

Guyana and West Indies opener Sewnarine Chattergoon and Bermine opener Maxie De Jonge slammed consecutive half centuries to steer their respective teams to victories in the Berbice zone of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) Neal and Massy countrywide limited overs tournament.

Chattergoon made 53 and along with Doodnauth Lallbeharry who made an unbeaten 56, guided Albion Community Centre to a nine-wicket victory over Skeldon Community centre  in a Zone B fixture, while De Jonge made an unbeaten 71 to steer Bermine to a nine-wicket victory over Berbice Police.

Port Mourant had a very good day when they romped to a comfortable 10-wicket victory over Kildonan, thanks mainly to the efforts of their spinners Shameer Khan (3-18) and former Berbice under-19 captain Rajiv Ivan who took 2-8. After seeing his teammate and national right arm leg spinner Devendra Bishoo restrict  the Skeldon batting to 125-9 from their 40 overs with 5-24, Chattergoon returned to make 53, following up on his half century the day before.

Chattergoon and Lallbeharry added 102 for the first wicket from just 15 overs to steer their team to an easy nine-wicket victory over Skeldon for whom Sherwin Murray had top scored with 21 in their innings.

De Jonge was also in the spotlight with the bat with his unbeaten 72 that took him 65 balls to compile and decorated with 11 fours in Bermine’s 112-1 made in 20.3 overs. He featured in a 71-run first wicket partnership with Anthony D’ Andrade (28) and a further 41 runs second wicket partnership with Richard Fredericks who was unbeaten with him at the end on seven.

Earlier, Police had been restricted to a paltry 111 from 33.2 overs with only Michael Newland (32), Jason Leitch (29) being the batsmen to offer resistance to fast bowler Kellon Henry (3-24) national under-19 off spinner Stephen Latcha (3-25) and Charles Shepherd 2-20.

At Bush Lot, Farm, Port Mourant had an early day in the field thanks to their spinners Khan (3-18) and Ivan (2-8) who restricted Kildonan for a meager 76 from 27.2 overs, with only Thomas George who made 23 offering resistance.

Port Mourant’s openers in Devendra Thakurdeen (27* 5×4) and Moshin Peerkhan who struck four fours and one six in his unbeaten 26, ensured that their remaining batsmen did not have to feel the heat as they blazed the trail in  scoring 79 from 5.5 overs.

In the other zone B fixture of the day, Scottsburg United inflicted a 39 run defeat on the  powerful Rose Hall Town Windies Sports Bar (RHTWSB) at Scottsburg.

Scottsburg won the toss and opted to take first strike and were bowled out for 137 in their penultimate over with Michael Kendall leading the way with 46 while Peter Grimes continued his good form with the bat, making 23 in support.

Left arm spinner Ravi Narine grabbed 4-22 while fast bowler Renwick Batson took 2-22 for RHTWSB who crumbled to 98 from 25 overs at their turn at the wicket as Kendall returned to scalp 4-15 with his off spinners.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Delbert Hicks and Batson both made 20, but their efforts were in vain against the bowling of Kendall and Grimes who also returned with the ball to claim 3-16.
