Blue Berry Hill back on top

Stalemates were the order of the night as Blue Berry Hill United took back the leadership position in the Upper Demerara Football Association (UDFA)/ Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport (MCYS) sponsored Premier League competition last Sunday night.

Playing in the feature game of the double header against former leaders and defending champions Topp XX at the Mackenzie Sports Club (MSC) ground, Blue Berry Hill found the back of the net in the fifth minute, courtesy of a Ray Babb Semple strike from the penalty spot.
They held onto that lead right up to four minutes from the final whistle when Ron Fiedtkou scored the equalizer for Topp XX, which guaranteed both teams a share of the points.

In the first game of the night’s proceedings, Winners Connections and Amelia’s Ward United also played to a two-all draw with four first half strikes by both teams.

Winners sent the ball rolling when Orden Browne found the back of the net in the 7th minute before Travis Waterton scored his first of two goals in the 29th minute. Even though a tense battle for supremacy ensued after, it was Winners who went into the lead, courtesy of a Renee Gibbons strike in the 36th minute, but Waterton ensured his team went into the break level with their opponents with a 45th minute strike.

There was a see saw battle in the second half, as both teams sought the initiative, but at the sound of the final whistle the score line was unchanged, resulting in both teams having to share the points in this encounter.

In a twist of things Eagles United who went under to Silver Shattas in their encounter lodged a protest with the UDFA against their opponents, claiming that they had played an unregistered player in their fixture which Silver Shattas won 2-1.

As of Sunday’s match, Blue Berry Hill United now have 16 points, the same as Silver Shattas but they enjoy a plus five goal advantage to Shattas plus one. Topp XX occupy  the third position with 15 followed by Milerock (14), Winners Connections (10) and Amelia’s Ward United with 9.
Both Netrockers and Eagles United are in the relegation zone with nine and six points respectively.

Action in the tournament continues this evening at the same venue, with Amelia’s Ward United taking on Milerock from 18:00hrs while Netrockers and Silver Shattas will do battle from 20:00hrs.
