National weightlifter Sean Cozier recently returned from the Criollo Cup Weightlifting Championships in Puerto Rico where he gained three bronze medals in the 94 kg weight class.
Competing with a bodyweight of 89.02 kg, Cozier’s best effort in the snatch was 115kg, after he missed his first attempt at 110kg. He returned in the clean and jerk where he made all his weights starting with 140 kg and finishing at 150 kg to take the third place position from home boy Abraham Melendez.
In an invited comment Cozier, who clearly stated that he was tired from all the travelling, told Stabroek Sport that he felt really good with his performance at the championships.
“I am feeling real good with the success, but it could have been better. It is a great feeling when one gets a medal for their country, whether it is gold, silver or bronze, especially in a sport as weightlifting.”
Cozier added, “The competition was very fierce and I was pushed to the limit, especially by Melendez, but at the end of it, I am happy with the results I came away with. I got a bronze each for the snatch and clean and jerk, and another for my overall third place.”
“When you look back at our success over the years, there is not much to shout about.
The last time a lifter represented Guyana at this championship was last year where Bhojnarine Persaud, who narrowly missed out on a medal, and to come and go one step better is great for the sport here in Guyana.”
Cozier, who was accompanied by national coach Clifton Moore, also equalled Guyana’s best performance at an international event, being ranked alongside Julian Mc Watt who also won three bronze medals at the Guatemala Cup back in 2001.
Next on his agenda would be the Guyana Amateur Weightlifting Association (GAWA) senior national weightlifting championships which is scheduled for the 9th November at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH), in which he is the record holder in the 85 kg and 94 kg respectively.
Meanwhile, the GAWA would like to express their heartfelt thanks to Republic Bank, Guyaa Olympic Association, Goodwood Racing Services and the many others for their support in making the trip for both Cozier and Moore a reality.
