Stuart Maloney with a first and a third-place finish in the first two races comfortably drove away with the 2008 Caribbean Motor Racing championships at the South Dakota Circuit yesterday.
Maloney’s father Douglas, who was in the lead with 35 points after the first two rounds was unable to participate after the head joint on his vehicle was blown.
His car remained in the pits for the rest of the race.
Stuart, though, withstood the challenge of the Caribbean superstars on the grid and proved his mettle.
Last year’s champion Doug “Hollywood” Gore was left ruing his luck after finishing second and third in his two races while race favourite David Summerbell jr. erased Andrew King’s lap record by setting a new a new one of 34:99 seconds.
Earlier, Ryan Rahaman in his Ford Sierra made light work of his opponents as he won all three of his races without any of the other competitors being on his tail as only Gavin Gouveia in race one and Ravi Singh in race two and three put up any resistance.
The rain too had its say as races after races were pushed back.
Almost one hour was lost before the event started and the first race saw a massive crash as Barbadian Stuart Willliams, Canadian-based Shawn King and Kevin Jeffrey collided causing the race steward to show the red flag indicating that the race would be restarted.
Before the crash, Stuart Maloney was leading Summerbell jr. in the fifth of eight laps.
In the Superbike category, Canadian Kevin Graham showed who the boss was as he took out racing local ace Steven Vieira.
In the 125cc group, Ravi Singh out rode his more accomplished adversaries Charles Henry and Vassy Barry to take the title.
In the Go Kart events the resurgent Stanley Ming won the first race and lost the second to Shane Alli.
Overall Guyana remained in the cellar with Barbados, thanks to the Maloneys, being crowned Caribbean champions.
