Church’s Chicken Champion of Champions…

Guyana Defence Force’s (GDF) welterweight boxer Devon Boatswain dominated Republican Gym’s Zackery Montique for the second time in his career forcing the referee to stop the contest on Friday evening as the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) organized Church’s Chicken, Champion of Champions tournament got underway at the National Gymnasium.

Montique was stopped in the early minutes of round three of their bout which saw some explosive body shots landed on Montique which eventually led to him signalling to the referee that he was not able to continue giving his opponent victory by way of ‘Referee Stopped Contest’ (RSC).
Boatswain had scored a TKO decision over Montique earlier in the year at the Gaskin and Jackson Jewellery National Open championships.
National featherweight boxer Clive Atwell returned to the ring and immediately made an impact.

Fighting out of the red corner, Atwell, who won a bronze medal at last year’s Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, stopped Republican Jermaine Pompey in the second round.

Essequibo’s Aubrey Moore and Bert Braithwaite (GDF) won their light welterweight (141lbs) bouts against Damien Ross and Dennis Daniels of the Republican Gym.

Moore won his bout via the RSC route while Braithwaite won by a unanimous decision in the most exhilarating fight of the evening.
In the Just Starter Cadet category, Forgotten Youth Foundation’s, Alex Murray, outdid his fellow gym mate Roman Pollard in a welterweight clash while Essequibo’s Glenroy Smith won against Ron Smith of Ricola Boxing Gym in a light welterweight bout.
Troyston Warde of Bauxite Bombers defeated Trevon George of Ricola in the lightweight division.

In other results: Sherwin Hope (Republican) defeated his gym mate Kenroy Fraser in a welterweight bout in the Just Starter senior division while Nandkumar Singh (Republican) stopped Melanie Damishana’s James Lamazon in their light welterweight match up.
In the bantamweight division, Quacy Hall (Timehri) was trounced by Clebert Harding (Republican).

In the Just Starter Under-15 Category, fighters from the blue corner won the first three fights of the evening. Seon Griffith of FYF, defeated Ricola’s Antonio Maraj (65-69lbs), Godfrey Lynch (Ricola) defeated his gym mate Shamar Moore (70-71lbs) and Maurice Primo of the West Side Bombers Gym blasted Ricola Keon Abrams in the 80-84lbs final.

Ricola’s John Moore and Alphaeus Suffrein were the victors in the final of the 95-99lbs and 105-109lbs divisions respectively when they defeated their gym mates Usiah Lall and Trevon George respectively.
