Craft couture rocked Carifesta

Gorgeous bags, hats, jewellery and hot, edgy hairstyles were promised and they were delivered at the Carifesta’s Hair and Accessory Show on Wednesday night at the Sophia exhibition site.

From short, sexy haircuts coloured without any bleach to bob cuts and sassy braid styles, the show rocked. Just about every moment was exciting, though a few times there was not that much to cheer about.

It was like one patron said, “These bags looked just like the ones I have home only thing they are covered with plastic”.

But there was a fresh, new eye-catching collection of locally made bags from Linden-based designer, Natasha. Her bags were mostly denim and floral prints. She incorporated plastics into the denim and played around with flowers and frills. There was one bag, which she designed from a pair of jeans.

There was a buzz at the fashion village that Natasha’s collection was not local but MC Kofi Branch repeated it enough times to dispel the doubts.

The show dubbed, ‘Craft Couture’ flowed from handbags to hats and Trinidad and Tobago put on a stunning display called, ‘Melting Pot’. The hats, mostly African-inspired, had matching little clutch purses and ranged from the ordinary African hats to the elaborate. There was even a little Rastafarian touch to the collection.

Nine One designs out of Barbados had what was perhaps the most interesting and gorgeous collection of jewellery which included pieces made from bamboo, wood, precious metals, shells and beads.

There were huge earrings, bangles and necklaces in various shapes and sizes. There were a few metallic looking pieces in the collection mostly hoops and chains.

The silver collection from local jewellers Gaskin and Jackson also made a statement. The pieces were classic with a few edgy designs.

Kevin John of Kevin’s Reflections opened the hair show with a fabulous short, Mohawk cut in a red wine colour. This was followed by a model sporting streaks of various colours in her hair, mostly red with a few blonde strands. Kevin, as he is popularly known, emphasized that he used no bleach for the colours.

But the hit for Kevin came when a male model emerged sporting the Carifesta X logo on his head coloured a bright gold.

A few other local hair salons had one featured hair style which was well received by the sizeable audience but it was the braids that turned out to be pretty hot and exciting. The styles were detailed and flashy.

By the time the show was ready to wrap up the audience had received a fill of accessories and hair styles and some hot body suits the models wore. They also got a taste of some fashionable African and Indian wraps.
