Under the guidance of national coach Paul James the three-time defending champions have accumulated 21 points from their seven matches with a goal difference of 26, scoring 30 goals and conceding just four.

Undoubtedly they hold the pole for best offensive team in the tourney so far and share the title of best defensive team with the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) who also conceded four goals.

Last year’s runners-up Sunburst Camptown stand second to the current defending champions with 18 points from six wins and a loss to Alpha,  while GDF are third, as they were last year, with 15 points from five wins and a loss each to Alpha and Camptown.

Fruta Conquerors are fourth with 10 points (3W, 1D, 3L), Pele – seven points (2W, 1D, 4L) and BK International Western Tigers – five points (1W, 2D, 4L).

Georgetown Football Club (GFC) and Flamingo are at the bottom of the points standing and are yet to register a win. Both teams have two losses and five draws from their seven games and are tied on two points.

GFC with a goal difference of -15 are ahead of Flamingo who has a goal difference of -25.

President of the GFA Troy Mendonca stated that he is very pleased that they have completed the first round of the tourney before being affected even more by the wet season because the few matches played at the Tucville playfield caused the ground immense damage.

“We would have liked to start the tournament earlier but because of a few aspects we weren’t able to do so,” Mendonca said.

“Right now we (GFA) are being watchful of the weather to recommence the second and final round of the tournament but for now the tournament is paused,” he stated.

He further commented on the current position of the tournament compared to last year’s, saying, “I am a bit surprised that it has the same trend, some teams have not stepped up from last year and it all boils down to administration in the clubs.”
