Cellink Plus Premier League…Western Tigers upset Pele

BK International Western Tigers stunned the Pele contingent with a 2-0 victory while the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) easily disposed of Flamingo when the first night of second round action in the Georgetown Football Association (GFA) organized Cellink Plus 2009 Premier League resumed at the Tucville Playfield on Friday.

Western Tigers won a hard fought game against Pele in the feature match of the night while GDF got past Flamingo by the same margin in the curtain raiser.

The Western Tigers versus Pele match showed that both teams were fit and raring to go and that they were readjusting to the large field, even though neither team was able to score in the first half.

When the second half resumed, the Tigers had a few shots on goal that were denied but then Colin Nelson drew first blood in the 67th minute from a top draw header developed from a corner kick that beat the Pele custodian who was nowhere in range to make the save.

Pele then stepped on the gas in search of the equalizer and made a few plays that took them into the opposition’s 18-yard box but could not produce a shot on target to trouble the ‘keeper in any way.

Not long afterwards  Western Tigers had another opportunity to score and made the most of it. Michael Henry charged down centre field marked closely by a Pele defender and let off a shot that got past the advancing goal keeper colliding with him and a defender in the process to double the lead in the 81st minute.

In the GDF/Flamingo showdown, it was evident that GDF were a bit rusty as they missed out on numerous opportunities to score while still commanding possession of the ball.

Warren Gilkes scored in the 57th minute to make the score  1 – 0 after neither team was able to score in the first half before  Jerome Richardson made it 2-0  when he scored on  the stroke of regulation time.
The action continues tonight with Sunburst Camptown tackling the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) in the curtain raiser at 6pm while Alpha United battle with the homesters Fruta Conquerors at 8pm.
