Police shoot man accused of stabbing wife

Police shot an East Bank Essequibo man in the hand on New Year’s day when he charged at them with a knife after stabbing his reputed wife.

According to a press release around 6.30pm police responded to a domestic violence report at Greenwich Park where 43-year-old Joseph Wessel had allegedly stabbed Indra Sancharan. Police said as they were attempting to arrest Wessel he charged at them with the weapon and ignored calls to desist, forcing them to use force.

Wessel then managed to escape but was arrested yesterday at Parika around 6.30am. The man was taken to the Leonora Cottage Hospital for treatment then he was arrested. Wessel is currently in police custody.  According to the release he had recently been released from prison where he had served time for wounding.

Meanwhile, police said 37-year-old Sancharan suffered stab wounds to her head, abdomen and right hand. She was treated at the Leonora hospital.
