Stores have regular customers but Munian’s store also had a regular burglar – seven times in three months – and he was yesterday sentenced to three years jail after he was caught on tape in the act.
Forty-two-year-old Albert Khan of 24 Station Street, Kitty, pleaded guilty to seven counts of break and enter and larceny and was sentenced when he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
It was alleged that between October 27 and 28 of last year, Khan broke and entered the store of John Munian and stole $8,000 in cash. It is also alleged that between November 11 and 12, Khan broke and entered the store of Munian and stole $5, 000 in cash.
Khan was also accused of breaking and entering Munian’s store between November 16 and 17 and stealing a cell phone valued $20, 000 and $8, 000 cash.
He was also accused of breaking into the store between November 3 and 4 and stealing $20, 000 in cash.
It was also alleged that between December 4 and 5, Khan again broke into the store and stole two bottles of cologne valued $6, 500 and 12, 000 in cash.
It was also alleged that between December 23 and 24, Khan once again broke into the store and stole $108, 000 in cash.
Khan was finally accused of breaking into the store between December 31 and January 1 of this year, and stealing 6 watches, valued $48,000, a bottle of cologne valued $7, 500 and one Avon set valued $1,900.
However, Khan stated that “I dey wrong foh steal de things”. He then stated that Munian had entrusted him with the keys to the store and he had only used it to steal a watch. He said that he later replaced the watch and had not stolen anything else.
Meanwhile, Prosecutor Denise Griffith stated that Munian had never entrusted Khan with his store keys but that Khan had stolen it. She said that after Munian had noticed that the keys were missing he had placed a video camera in the store and it had recorded when Khan had broken into the store to steal. Griffith had also noted that when Khan was finally arrested he had admitted to the police that he had stolen the items.
The magistrate subsequently sentenced Khan to three years imprisonment.
