Accused in boutique break and enter, bailed

Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson granted $50,000 bail to an East La Penitence man accused of breaking into a boutique and stealing a number of items.

Sherwin Matthew, 30, pleaded not guilty to the charge of break and enter and larceny when he appeared on Monday in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

It is alleged that on January 7, at North Road, Matthew broke and entered Sandus Boutique and stole a quantity of ladies clothing and several bottles of perfume, totalling $120,000, the property of Dustin Ramsaran.

In his defence Matthew told the court “de police tell me that he know I didn’t do it and that he would ah let me go on lil bail.” He said the officer then told him that the matter would be put before the court. Matthew then denied any knowledge of the break-in.

Meanwhile, the prosecution told the court that on the said day around 4 am police on patrol observed that the boutique looked as though it had been breached. Subsequently they saw Matthew scaling the fence and gave chase. They apprehended him with a big bag, containing some of the items mentioned in the charge, in his possession.

Matthew was ordered to return to court on February 11.
