Medical student critical after Corentyne accident

A 20-year-old University of Guyana (UG) student is in a critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) after being involved in an accident on the Corentyne on Saturday evening.

Fizal Hussein, a first year medical student of UG and of New Amsterdam is in an unconscious state at the medical institution where he was admitted after undergoing surgery. Hussein and another UG student, Valini Ramotar, both former students of President’s College were involved in the accident which occurred on the Number 19 Village public road. Ramotar, who was the driver of the car, escaped with cuts and bruises.

Hussein’s sister, Shireen told this newspaper that the duo had gone to their homes in Berbice for the weekend. They had apparently decided to take a drive to the Corentyne before returning to the University and were on there way back when the vehicle ended up under a truck that was parked on the side of the road. Shireen said that it is unclear how they ended up there.
Hussein, who was sitting in the front passenger seat suffered head injuries and was rushed to the New Amsterdam Hospital. However, yesterday he was transferred to the GPH, where he underwent surgery.
