Corentyne accident

The 20-year-old University of Guyana (UG) student, who was involved in an accident on the Corentyne Highway on Saturday remains in a critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) but his condition, has slightly improved.

Fizal Hussein of New Amsterdam, a first-year medical student of UG, is still in an unconscious state at the medical institution where he was admitted after undergoing surgery, his sister Shireen said.

However, she said, he was now breathing on his own and his heartbeat had stabilized.

Hussein and another UG student, Valini Ramotar, were involved in the accident which occurred on the Number 19 Village public road. Ramotar, who was the driver of the car, escaped with cuts and bruises.

Shireen had told this newspaper that the duo had gone to their homes in Berbice for the weekend. They had apparently decided to take a drive to the Corentyne before returning to the university and were on their way back when the vehicle ended up under a truck that was parked on the side of the road.

She had said that it was unclear how they ended up there. Hussein, who was sitting in the front passenger seat suffered head injuries and was rushed to the New Amsterdam Hospital. He was later transferred to the GPH, where he underwent surgery
