Enachu police shoot shop break-in suspect

A break and enter suspect was shot by a policeman who responded to the call that someone was robbing a shop at Enachu, Mazaruni River.

According to a police press release around 20:10 hours on Sunday the police received a report of a break and enter at a shop at Enachu.

An armed police rank from the Enachu Police Station responded to the report.  On arrival at the scene the officer observed that the shop was closed but several boards had been removed from a northern wall of the building. When the officer shone his torchlight into the building he observed someone moving around inside and called on the person to come out but got no response. He decided to go into the building and upon entering he was attacked by a man armed with a knife. The attack caused the policeman to respond with force, resulting in the suspect being shot and injured.

The man, later identified as Andrew Alphonso Wilson, 19, of Friendship, Pomeroon, was reportedly found with a quantity of cash and jewellery in his possession.

He was admitted a patient at the Kurupung Medical Centre and efforts are being made to have him transferred to Georgetown, the release said.
