More CANU officers trained to use drug detector

The Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) says another batch of CANU officers has been trained to use the Itemiser 3.

In a press release the GRA said training is the second phase in the Counter Terrorism Capacity Building (CTCB) programme. The objective is to provide the officers with the technical knowledge and skills to effectively use the Itemiser 3 and to recognize some of the elements used to construct explosive devices. The Itemiser 3 is a trace detector machine designed to recognize traces of drugs, explosives and chemicals.

The officers were also informed about the potential dangers of chemicals, drugs and explosives and the steps that need to be taken in handling each.

The programme was facilitated by two senior programme advisers from the Canada Service Agency and was held on January 12 at the Customs and Trade Admin-istration training room.

The GRA said in 2007 Guyana was the last country to receive the CTCB training. Phase one of the training was held on March 6, 2007 when the Canadian government through the Canadian High Commission donated the $9M machine to the security sector.
