Larceny accused says borrowed cycle was stolen from him

A carpenter who allegedly stole a pedal cycle from a woman was granted bail when he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson on Monday at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

Orin Alves of 180 Prashad Nagar, pleaded not guilty to the charge of simple larceny.

It is alleged that on November 23 last year, he stole a pedal cycle valued $10,000 from Susan McNichols.

However, Alves stated that he had borrowed the bicycle from McNichols and left it outside a store while he was purchasing some construction equipment. He said that when he returned to the spot where he had parked the cycle, it was missing.

He further stated that since then he went into the Rupununi area and when he returned to Georgetown he was arrested for allegedly stealing the bicycle.

Alves also stated that he was willing to recompense McNichols for the bicycle.

The prosecution made no objections to Alves’s bail application when he suggested it and the magistrate  subsequently granted it in the sum of $20,000. The defendant has to  return to court on January 20.
