Ministry aids Cove and John, Nootenzuil farmers

Cove and John and Nootenzuil are the latest East Coast Demerara communities to receive assistance from the agriculture ministry following a visit from a team of workers from within the sector.

According to a Government Information Agency (GINA) press release a team comprising veterinarians and officers from the ministry’s crops and livestock division as well as staff from the new Guyana Marketing Corporation visited the areas last week. Farmers benefited from donations of plants, fertilizers and other chemicals to help them to restart cultivation. The exercise was done in a systemic way after farmers groups prepared a list of persons affected.

GINA said recently several villages including Supply, Unity, Victoria, Mahaica and Mahaicony were given similar assistance. Minister of Agriculture Robert Persaud had previously announced that $95M will be distributed “across the country and although this cannot compensate for all the losses, it will help.”
