Porter fined $30,000 for ‘backtrack’ trip to T&T

An 18-year-old porter yesterday pleaded guilty to the charge of illegally departing Guyana when he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

On November 6, 2008 at Essequibo, Jose Geer of Golden Fleece, Essequibo illegally departed Guyana without presenting himself to an immigration officer.

When given a chance to speak, Geer told the magistrate that a friend took him to Trinidad.

He explained, “Is me friend carry me to Trinidad fuh wuk as a security guard.” When asked how he left Guyana, he said, “We lef from Essequibo in a ship fuh guh to Trinidad an we only get fuh spend two months over deh.”

He was fined $30,000 or six months imprisonment.
