Two men held after UG student attacked

A female University of Guyana student was cuffed about the body by two men and robbed of cash among other items while walking towards the back gate of institution on Thursday night.

A quick response by the police resulted in the arrest of the men and the recovery of the cash.

A police press release yesterday said that investigations have revealed that around 8 pm the female student was walking towards the back gate of the Turkeyen campus when she was confronted by the two men who cuffed her about the body and took away a bag containing local and foreign currency, a cell phone and two airline tickets and escaped.

The police responded and based on the men’s description and other information managed to apprehend them shortly after. The stolen currency was recovered.

The men are in police custody and will be charged shortly.

In the past there have been similar incidents in the same area that had raised security concerns.

Students were advised not to use that back gate after certain hours but many have refused to heed the warning.

They prefer to use this route which is linked to the Sophia area since it gets them to the city faster.
