Antigua PM mourns passing of Mrs Jagan

-says she was a monumental figure of her time

Former President, Mrs Janet Jagan, was a monumental figure of her time and an inspiration for the people of Guyana and the Caribbean, Antiguan Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer said in letter dispatched to President Bharrat Jagdeo yesterday.

Spencer said that the former President was also an “inspiration to the many women who now hold influential positions within government and politics in the Caribbean.  Her commitment to the full emancipation of women in Latin America and the Caribbean, including equal education, equal housing opportunities, equal pay for equal work and free maternity leave will long be remembered.”

The Antigua PM said she will also be long remembered for the sterling service she gave to her country as Guyana’s President and her work along with her husband former president Dr. Cheddi Jagan in the founding of the PPP.

“Guyana and the Caribbean have indeed lost one of our outstanding women.  She leaves a model of service which needs to be emulated by aspiring leaders”, the PM said in the letter, adding “we bid one of the Caribbean’s greatest women fond farewell.”
