Woman stabbed in throat vows to pursue justice

Twenty-one-year-old Maria Ward, who was stabbed several times by her reputed husband early Monday morning, has vowed to ensure that the man is brought to justice.

Lying on her hospital bed yesterday in Ward C2 of the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPHC) the woman related that when the man took her to the hospital on Monday morning he gave police officers an incorrect name and told them she was attacked and he went to her assistance.

It was the same story he told her to tell hospital officials while she was being transported to the hospital in a taxi. However, the woman told the officials while she was in the emergency unit that it was Christopher Haynes known as ‘Clint’ and ‘Mark Anthony’ who had attacked her after accusing her of being unfaithful.

The woman recalled that the man had slammed her into a concrete post in front of his mother’s Golden Grove, East Coast Demerara home before slashing her throat and stabbing her three times after they had spent some hours on the seawalls.

She said contrary to what her family had initially told Stabroek News the man’s mother did not look out of the house when she called for assistance but his sister looked out and she had an argument with Haynes but offered no assistance to her. By then the woman said she was injured and bleeding and Haynes later took off her clothes and gave her some of his clothes to put on. She is not sure what he did with her bloodied clothes but he later hailed a taxi and took her to the hospital.

He was arrested after the young woman, who has a two-year-old son for him, told officials that he was the one who had attacked her.

Haynes was expected to leave the country yesterday morning. He remains in custody as police continue their investigation.
