Six homeless after Meadow Brook fire

A fire last evening destroyed a two-bedroom house in the Meadow Brook Squatting Area leaving six persons homeless.

When Stabroek News visited the scene last evening only ashes remained where the house once was and a large crowd was standing in front of the yard.

A female neighbour told Stabroek News that the fire started around 7:33 pm and she was alerted to the fire by what smelled like a burning mattress. When she investigated she observed the back of the house burning and from all indications no one was home.

She immediately called out for one of the occupants of the home, Kevin, who was a short distance away but by the time he arrived the house was almost engulfed.

“I say to he, ‘Kevin ent nothing we could do now’ and he like just get frustrated and hold he head and run away,” the woman said. By the time the fire service arrived on the scene the house was no more.

The woman said the house belonged to one Linda McKenzie, who lives in Barbados and it was occupied by her four sons and two other young men.

“The house had everything, fridge, TV, chair set everything,” the woman said adding that while the occupants had a generator it was not on at the time so it is not clear what caused the fire.

“Aunty Linda work hard to build duh house and is since I small I know she living there,” the woman lamented.

Many other neighbours on the scene testified to the woman’s hard-working nature which saw her always trying to provide for her family.

None of the young men were at the scene almost an hour after the fire.
