Carpenter remanded on attempted murder and armed robbery charges

Sherwin Trotman, a 29-year-old Sophia resident, who was allegedly involved in the attempted murder of one man and armed robbery of another, was remanded to prison yesterday when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

Trotman, a carpenter of Lot 45 Section D, South Turkeyen, Sophia was not required to plead to the indictable charge of attempted murder when Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson read it to him and robbery under arms when Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton read that other charge to him.

It is alleged that on April 23, Trotman, with intent to commit murder, unlawfully wounded Emmett Sauers.
Trotman is also accused on the same day of using a gun to rob Rodsdale Sutton of a gold band and ring, totalling $140,000 in value.

Sauers, who was also present in court, stated that he had sustained a gunshot wound to his neck and the bullet is currently lodged in his shoulder.

However, attorney-at-law Adrian Thompson stated that from information gathered his client was not arrested for the current matters but for something else.

He said that his client was placed on two identification parades and was never positively identified by Sutton or Sauers.
The lawyer also stated that his client had been in police custody for over 72 hours without being charged and was later presented with the current charges.

The defence attorney then applied for bail.
However, Police Prosecutor Denise Griffith objected to the bail application stating that Trotman had a robbery under arms matter also against him.

She said that Trotman had been arrested in relation to two robberies under arms and he was positively identified as one of the perpetrators by both Sutton and Sauers. She also said that another man had been charged with the robbery of Sutton and the shooting of Sauers.

She said that Trotman had shot at Sutton while robbing him but the bullet ended up hitting Sauers in the neck.
Magistrate Robertson subsequently ordered that Trotman be remanded to prison and transferred the attempted murder case to Court Five for June 5.

Magistrate Octive-Hamilton also ordered that he be remanded to prison and that he appear back in court on August 4 for the robbery under arms case.

Magistrate Octive-Hamilton had last month remanded Dion Layne to prison over the robbery of Sutton and discharging a loaded firearm at Sauers.

He had pleaded not guilty to the charges of robbery under arms and discharging a loaded firearm when they were read to him at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

Attorney-at-law Mortimer Coddette who represented him had applied for reasonable bail. But Police Prosecutor Robert Clement objected.

Layne is scheduled to appear back in court on Friday.
