Port-mortem on dumped Corentyne businessman set

The post-mortem examination on Fazal Hoosain, the Number 69 Village businessman found dead in the Corentyne River, will be conducted today pending information from the Surinamese police.

Stabroek News learnt from a reliable source that Hoosain’s post-mortem, which should have been conducted yesterday, was delayed because police were awaiting information from Suriname.

The man left Guyana at approximately 4 am on Wednesday and travelled to Suriname on one of the smaller boats that would illegally cross the Corentyne. Relatives had said Hoosain’s driver there took him around Suriname to conduct his business and then transported him to the waterfront where he boarded the boat which left at 5.30 pm. Minutes after boarding the vessel Hoosain was abducted by gunmen, who relatives believe brutally murdered him, and later dumped his body in the Corentyne River.

Hoosain, a well-known businessman of Number 69 Village, was discovered by a Suriname-based Japanese fisherman in the Corentyne River. His body was fished out of the river at approximately 2.30 pm on Thursday. His hands and feet were tightly bound and relatives who identified the body had reported that several marks of violence were visible. Police are yet to issue a press release on the matter. Stabroek News understands that three suspects were taken into custody at the Springlands Police Station on Thursday evening.

Indar Persaud, Chairman of the Number 66 Village Fish-port Complex, told Stabroek News yesterday that Hoosain was a fisherman and an active member of the organization. Hoosain, according to the man, owned three fishing boats which operated in Suriname and had travelled there on Wednesday to renew his operations licence.

Relatives have since indicated that Hoosain’s funeral will be conducted according to Muslim rites at the earliest available time. However, they refused to discuss the matter further.
