Army dismisses Lt Rigby

The Guyana Defence Force has confirmed that Second Lieutenant Duane Rigby was dishonourably discharged from the force for being out of barracks beyond 18:00 hrs on the day two soldiers died following a boat mishap in the Cuyuni River.

In a statement the army said Rigby was sentenced to dismissal and this sentence was confirmed on June 11, by the officer who convened the court martial.

Corporal Wesley Hopkinson and Private Colwin Harris died following the mishap.
Rigby was the officer in charge but was not at the base at the time of the incident. He was therefore found guilty of being out of the barracks beyond the stipulated time without obtaining permission from headquarters.
The soldiers were stationed at Eteringbang.
