Rape victim’s mom to meet senior cop today

The girl told Stabroek News yesterday that she was feeling ok except for a slight burning pain in the stomach. Her mother related that the teen’s condition has been improving and she has been eating light foods. The young woman ingested a dose of rat poison, commonly called ‘blue rice’.

Her mother said that she is expected to meet with a senior officer at the Police Head-quarters to relay information on the matter. The frustrated mother said she hopes the authorities ensure justice is served since her daughter is in a defenceless situation and sees the alleged perpetrator of the act almost on a daily basis.

The young woman was taken to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre after ingesting the poison but was subsequently referred to the GPHC after doctors at Diamond determined that her condition was too serious.

The girl was 17 at the time of the incident where she reported that she was sexually assaulted by an ex-policeman last October. After an initial report was made to the police, the file was sent to the Director of Public Prosecu-tions (DPP) for advice more than six months ago. The family is still awaiting word on the case as they keep in touch with the police.

The family had sought counseling for the teenager and the matter was also brought to the attention of a government minister.
