A Stabroek Market stall holder is now counting his losses following a break-in at his stall on Wednesday night by thieves in which approximately $3M worth of DVD players, mobile phones and tape decks among other electrical items were stolen.
According to Mohammed Khan, a part owner of the MBI Music Masters and DVD centre, this is the second time within the past three months the business has suffered at the hands of thieves.
He said a few weeks ago thieves had entered the stall and carted off mainly cellular phones.
This time around, he explained, the men took more expensive items such as a quantity of portable DVD players and digital photo frames leaving the empty boxes behind.
Noting that the stall was closed up around 5 pm on Wednesday afternoon, the man said he was shocked yesterday morning around 9:15 when he opened the stall for business and found an empty showcase which had contained a quantity of mobile phones as well as a few boxes which had phone accessories among other items scattered around on the floor.
He said the thieves gained entry to his business by prying open a part of the upper portion of the wall at the back of the stall.
This newspaper observed fingerprints on a section of the ceiling of the stall, close to where the thieves gained entry on Wednesday night. Khan said the fingerprints were left there by thieves during the previous break-in when they ripped out a portion of the ceiling to gain entry to the stall.
The man noted that officers from the City Constabulary should have been more alert within the market on Wednesday night. He said that the officers usually patrol the area with guard dogs during the course of the night.
While Stabroek News was at the scene of the break-in yesterday, two CID officers were conducting investigations into the matter.
