A 25-year-old man, who stated that he “unintentionally” hit his grandmother in her face with a telephone in a fit of anger after she had slapped him, was yesterday remanded to prison when he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
Albert Caseley, 25, of Lot 35 West Ruimveldt, pleaded guilty with an explanation to the charge of assault causing actual bodily harm.
He admitted that he unlawfully assaulted his grandmother, Cleo Gittens, so as to cause her actual bodily harm at their West Ruimveldt home on June 27.
He said the incident was sparked from his mother and Gittens telling his two-year-old son that he would beat him if he misbehaved. He said that because of this his son had become afraid of him.
He explained that on the day in question his son was hitting a wall and disturbing the household so he dealt the child a lash on his legs. He said when he did this, his grandmother got abusive and even slapped him. He said that in a fit of anger he swung the cordless phone he had in his hand towards the door but instead it hit Gittens to her eye.
He said that he then ran out of the house.
However, Gittens, who was also present in court, told the magistrate that Caseley had always been abusive to her, his mother and his wife. She said that on the day in question she had voiced her displeasure at Caseley beating his son severely for just hitting a wall. She said she took the child from Caseley, who then got disrespectful towards her and so she dealt him a slap. She said that Caseley took the phone that was in his hands and struck her in her face.
Caseley then interjected, “I would never really knock meh grandmother, is jus de passion.”
The prosecution then stated that this was not the first occasion that Caseley had been abusive to his family members.
The magistrate then ordered that a probation report be done and remanded Caseley to prison until it has been completed.
