Two cutlass bandits were said to have robbed two men of $1.6M at Ruby, East Bank Essequibo (EBE) yesterday and the alleged victims as well as two others are in custody assisting with investigations, police said last evening.

In a press statement, the law enforcement authorities said that investigations are being conducted into the robbery which occurred at around mid-day yesterday at Ruby. “A clerk and a porter were reportedly attacked and robbed of $1.6 million by two men armed with cutlasses”, the statement said.

“It is reported that the clerk and the porter were in a motor canter vehicle parked on the roadway, when the men approached and held them up and took away a bag with the money from the clerk and escaped on a motor cycle. An alarm was raised and the driver of the vehicle returned and gave chase behind the perpetrators. He caught up with them at Philadelphia, EBE, and struck the rear of the vehicle causing the two men to fall. However, they managed to escape”, the police said.

The lawmen responded to a report and during a search of the area recovered $100 000. The two alleged victims along with the driver and another man are in police custody assisting with investigations.

Meantime, police are yet to detain any suspects in the murder of 28-year-old guesthouse owner, Tashmudaye Lall, who was fatally shot by bandits on Wednesday night.

A post-mortem examination was conducted yesterday and revealed that the bullet had penetrated his heart, his reputed wife, Annette Henaro said. Lall died minutes after being shot at his Tuschen Housing Scheme, East Bank Essequibo home by bandits at about 8:45pm on Wednesday.

Police had said that investigations revealed that Lall was at home with Henaro and an employee, John De La Cruz when two men approached on the pretext of renting a room. As Lall opened the door the men who were armed with handguns barged in and held up the three occupants, the police said. They demanded cash and $45,000 was handed over. Apparently not satisfied, the perpetrators demanded more and struck De La Cruz to his head with a gun. “A scuffle ensued between Lall and the men during which he was shot to his shoulder and the men escaped,” according to the police. Henaro and De La Cruz had told this newspaper he was on his knees begging for his life, when he was shot.

Lall and De La Cruz were taken to the Leonora Hospital where Lall was pronounced dead on arrival and De La Cruz was treated and sent away. The businessman will be cremated tomorrow at Parika, after a building at the Ruimzeight cremation site burned to the ground on Thursday night.
