Two freed of murder charges, another to stand trial

Two persons accused of murder had their cases discharged at the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court on Friday while on Thursday another murder accused was committed to stand trial for manslaughter.

Lennox Fitzroy Smith walked free after the case against him was discharged by Magistrate Fazil Azeez at Vreed-en-Hoop on Friday. He had been accused of murdering Walter Watson Dorsette. According to the charge, between February 25, 2008 and March 1, 2008, he murdered Dorsette. The decomposing body of Dorsette was found at his Anna Catherina, West Coast Demerara home and following investigations, police charged Smith.

On Friday too, Farida Baksh, 31, of 578 Zeelugt, East Bank Essequibo (EBE) was freed after the case against her was discharged. She had been accused of murdering her reputed husband, Seelall Jitlall on March 6, 2007. It was reported that on that date, the body of Jitlall was discovered by his son on his kitchen floor with a stab wound to his upper chest. A bloodied knife was found near to his corpse. The police were reportedly told conflicting stories by Baksh and her relatives and they arrested her and later charged her.

Meantime, on Thursday at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court, Magistrate Azeez committed Vijay Mohanram to stand trial in the High Court for manslaughter. Mohanram was granted bail in the sum of $250 000 after an application by his attorney. He had been charged with murder with the allegation being that on July 11, 2006, at De Kinderen, WCD, he murdered Lilawattie Bissoon.

In a bail application, his attorney, Sandil Kissoon said that his client lives at Lot 93 Cornelia Ida, WCD and is the father of three children. He said that for ten years prior to the incident, Mohanram was employed with the Guyana Sugar Corporation. He was granted bail.
